Facts at A Glance

The original Abbaye was a spiritual retreat for religious groups and pilgrims. Founded in 1131 by an Englishman, Stephen Harding, third Abbot of Cîteaux, the Abbaye’s origins are deeply rooted in the Cistercian Order’s long tradition of humility, peace and hospitality.

Set in 15 acres of beautiful parkland, the old buildings have been transformed into a luxurious country house hotel (under Relais & Châteaux association) where you can relax and enjoy the unique, refreshing atmosphere of this ancient place. The monks have long gone but Abbaye de la Bussière still retains an air of tranquillity, hard to find in the modern world.
